Dear Lion President:
Congratulations on your new leadership role at the club level! At present you are the key
contact until your Student Speaker Contest Chairperson is appointed. We had a gratifying
district contest in 2011-12, and with your help, we aim to double the participation this Lions
year. To help reach our goal, the district has already selected the topic for the 2012-13
speaker contest. It is "Genetic Engineering—Our Future or Our Demise?" Contest packets were
distributed at the Cabinet Meeting in Tonopah on August 11, 2012. This early start will give your
club a head start to contact schools in your community during August and September. As you
know, at the club contest, every participant receives a cash award. The winner is awarded $75
and each finalist is awarded $25 cash. At its recent meeting the Student Speaker Foundation
increased the scholarship amounts to $1,250 for region winners and $5,000 for the district final
winner.
