The Lions HealthFirst Foundation is providing free ultrasound test screenings for low-income seniors and low-cost screening for others. To succeed we have to inform, educate and motivate people to be proactive in matters regarding their health.

"We must let people know they can do this without a doctor’s prescription," Bartel said. "If we don’t educate them, they’re not going to come in." The Foundation bought state of the art medical ultrasound equipment and has been using staff sonographers from the American Institute of Medical Sonography to operate the equipment.

Bartel says the Foundation spends about $100 per patient for medical personnel to perform the tests, read the results and write the report.

The Foundation is a nonprofit organization, so none of the money will be kept as profit. Any money over the basic cost will be put into the free-screening fund.

"Ultrasound is safe, it does not use radiation, is also quick, easy and noninvasive," Bartel said. "It’s a safe and relatively inexpensive tool to find health problems in its early stage."
